Bhutan Fly Fishing Tour 12 Days

Fishing rules and some facts about fishing in Bhutan:

  • 1st and 4th Bhutanese calendar months usually fall in Jan/Feb are considered holy month.
  • Fishing is prohibited within a kilometer of a Monastery, a Lhakhang, a Dzong or any religious center, including bridges and including important government institutions. Fishing season is 'closed' for the months of October to December every year.
  • Fishing is banned on auspicious days of the 8th, 15th and 30th day of every Bhutanese month, and on the 4th day of the 6th month. Sale of meat would also be banned on the descending day of Lord Buddha.
  • Fishing is banned in the breeding season covering the month of October to December.
  • Fishing is allowed only with rod and reel (spinning and fly).
  • Any fish caught below the size of 8 inches in length should be released back to the water. The usual size so far caught in the local water is of 1 lb. Weight. The maximum size caught is of 10 lbs.
  • Fishing is not developed and published as revenue earning an economic venture but it is scientifically developed conservative plan.


  • The daily fishing permit fee is Nu500, approx. US$15-20 per day.
  • Passport scan and passport style photo required for your permit.
  • Hire an experienced guide to fishing knowledge.
  • Combine some great fishing with a magical cultural experience. Add in a trek too if you wish.
  • Fishing is permitted January-February inclusive and June-September inclusive.
  • Fishing is not permitted on selected 'Auspicious Days' as per the Bhutanese Lunar Calendar.

Equipment you must bring for Fly-fishing:

Most of the fly-fishing equipment are not readily available in Bhutan so you must bring your own equipment depending on your experience and comfort. Our guide can make good number of flies but initially you must bring your own.

Day 01: Arrive Paro – Thimphu Drive
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet with our tour guide and then transfer to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, will meet you. It will take you 60 minutes to reach Thimphu from Paro town or airport. Later in Thimphu, visit to Giant Buddha, Memorial Stupas, Takin Zoo (National Animal of Bhutan) and Tashichho Dzong (Giant fortress) Dinner and overnight stay at hotel.
Day 02: Thimphu – Punakha – Tsirang
Today, we will depart early for Punakha valley. Enroute to Dochu La Pass (108 Stupas) Stop for a panoramic view of Himalayan range from pass. Later descent down towards Punakha valley crossing mitsana and lobesa. Visit to Chimi Lhakhang temple (dedicated to Divine Madmane) and Punakha Dzong that is located between Pho Chu (male) and Mo Chu (female) river. After lunch we then drive towards Tsirang, where our today’s fishing spot is located, following Punatsangchhu River at our left hand side, all the way from Bajothang. Today we won’t be fishing but we will make it everything ready for tomorrows fishing. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camping.
Day 03: Angling / Fishing in Tsirang (Sunkosh)
Today, we will start our angling very early along the Sunkosh River and we will be spending whole day doing angling. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camp.
Day 04: Fishing in Sunkosh
Again, today also we will spend whole day angling along Sunkosh. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camp.
Day 05: Tsirang – Tingtibi
After early breakfast, we will depart for countryside, Tingtibi village, where there is less settlement with basic infrastructures. Enroute to Tsirang – Damphu, Sarpang and then to Gelephu. After crossing, Tsirang, we then descent down till we reach stretch of Sarpangtar, upon reaching Gelephu town we will climb uphill leaving Gelephu behind. We will stop for a while at immigration checkpoint and continue towards Tingtibi. Dinner and overnight stay at tent / camp.
Day 06: Golden Mahseer Angling in Tingtibi
Today we will try to spend whole day at Tingtibi along Mangde chu River, hunting for Golden Mahseer and Chocolate Mahseer. Tingtibi is very popular for Chocolate Mahseer. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camp.
Day 07: Tingtibi – Panbang
After early breakfast, we will depart for Panbang, the Royal Manas National Park. We will spend half of the day fishing Golden Mahseer. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camp / lodge.
Day 08: Golden Mahseer Angling in Panbang
We will spend whole day angling in Panbang that falls under Royal Manas National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at tent / camp / lodge
Day 09: Panbang – Gelephu – Tsirang
After breakfast, we will drive back to Tsirang for overnight stay. Visit to small town of Tsirang – Damphu. Dinner and overnight stay at the tent / camp / lodge.
Day 10: Tsirang – Thimphu
After breakfast, we will drive back to Thimphu, crossing Sunkosh River and Lobesa village. After crossing Lobesa, gently we will climb upward until we reach on top of the Dochu La Pass. From Dochu La Pass, we then descend down until we reach Simtokha. If time permits, visit weekend market and Thimphu downtown. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 11: Thimphu – Paro (Tiger’s Nest Hike)
Right after early breakfast, we will drive back to Paro valley, following Thimphu – Paro highway and our car will directly drop us to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) base. From here will hike uphill about 2-3 hours and 1-hour downhill, depending on physical strength. Afternoon visit Museum which is destroyed by an earthquake and currently its under renovations and Rinpung Dzong. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. Optional: One can also use pony / horse till cafeteria
Day 12: Departure
After morning breakfast, our guide and driver will transfer you to airport for your onward flight and assist with your luggage
